They get compared because they are both "the hill country", and they are not really alike at all. One is a working city with a temple in it. The other is a village with a view.
Kandy is a city you visit for a specific thing: the Temple of the Tooth. Ella is a landscape you visit to walk around in. If you want culture, Kandy. If you want views, Ella.
Because the train between them is one of the two stretches of Sri Lankan railway genuinely worth planning a day around, and because they are on the same line to the coast. Kandy first, then Ella, then down to the south is the natural direction of travel.
On our whole-island route you get two nights at each. Your driver takes the luggage by road while you take the train, and meets you at the other end, which is the arrangement that makes the train practical rather than a logistics problem.
Kandy is congested, and the traffic around the lake at the wrong hour is genuinely tiring. Most of the good hotels are outside town, so you drive in.
Ella is small and has become very popular, which shows. The main street is cafes and tuk-tuks, and the Nine Arch Bridge at train time is crowded. Stay on an estate above the town and it is a different trip.
It is a long day, and the scenic stretch is the second half. Many people join at Nanu Oya or Hatton instead and take the best part without the full journey. Ask us which suits your route.
Yes, with two nights in each and the drive between them, but it makes for a full week. Ten nights is more comfortable if you also want the Cultural Triangle.
Kandy, usually. Shorter walks, more to do indoors when it rains, and the hotels have pools. Ella is steep and the good bits involve hiking.
