Is Galle right for you?
Galle Fort is a walled town on a headland, and people still live and work inside it. Staying within the ramparts means stepping out of your door into it in the evening, once the day visitors have gone. That is the case for paying more and accepting a smaller room.
The alternative is the sand: Unawatuna, Koggala and the bays east of it, twenty minutes away, where you get a pool and a beach and drive in for the fort.
Good for
History, walking, sunset on the ramparts, and an easy last stop before flying.
Not ideal for
Swimming between May and October, when the south coast surf is rough.
Worth knowing
The fort is at its best after five, when the coaches leave. Plan your walk for then.
