Is Colombo right for you?
Colombo is a working city rather than a sight, and a first-time visitor with ten nights is usually better off heading straight out to Negombo or up to the Cultural Triangle. We will say so rather than sell you a night here.
Where it does make sense: a late arrival when nobody wants a four-hour drive, a long layover, or a last night before an early flight. It has the best food on the island, and half a day in it is genuinely worth having.
Good for
Late arrivals, early departures, layovers, and eating well.
Not ideal for
Beaches, and anyone on a short trip who wants to be out in the country.
Worth knowing
The airport is an hour north of the city, not in it. If you land late, Negombo is twenty minutes away and makes more sense.
